For Those of Us Who Tend To Live In Our Heads, How Do We Drop Into Our Hearts?

Hi Friend,

Recently, I gave a speech to a group of CEOs and business leaders about communicating with authenticity. The audience was warm, engaged, and a lot of fun to work with.

But during the Q&A, one of the CEOs raised his hand and asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks.

He asked,

For those of us who tend to live in our heads, how do we drop into our hearts?

I mean … what a question! What a beautiful, human question.

After gushing over the question, I finally got around to answering it.

I said, Getting out of the head and into the heart is unique to each of us. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa.

What works for me is to remember that my only job is to be of service … to teach what I know so that other people can shine. This thought—
It’s not about me, it’s about them—instantly makes me feel a connection to other people, and it inspires me to give it my all. Not because I’ve memorized all the right words and phrases, but because my heart delights at the prospect of helping someone else.

Your thought experiment this week is twofold:

  1. Hit reply and let me know what YOU do to get out of your head and into your heart.

  2. Consciously work with your own head-to-heart strategy for a specific conversation this week, and notice … how does it help you as a communicator?

Thanks, as always, for being here. I’m taking off next week to celebrate Christmas and New Year with my family! I wish you a holiday season full of abundance, warmth, and a deep sense of peace and joy. See you in the New Year, my friend.

Shine on,
B
